Magical Make-up Creations for Benjamin Britten's Opera

Magical Make-up Creations for the Midsummer Night's Dream
On January 17, 2025, the Freiburg University of Music celebrated the performance of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Benjamin Britten, which transported the audience into an enchanting world full of fairies, magic and passionate intrigue. It was a pleasure for us to design the make-up for this fascinating production - together with my colleague Aline.
Visual Magic: How Make-up Brings Characters to Life
In close collaboration with the team and the actors, we were able to design the make-up creations for the opera's characters. It was particularly exciting to visually bring the magical creatures such as fairies, elves and forest spirits to life. Our task was to complement the overall visual image of the production with suitable make-up looks that reflect the characters in both their mystical and emotional depth. With a mixture of shimmering accents for the fairies and dramatic accents for the forest creatures, we carefully adapted every detail. The aim was to design the make-up in such a way that it both underlines the fantasy of the opera and supports the actors in their roles. The interplay of make-up, light and stage brought the magical atmosphere even more to the fore.

It is a wonderful experience to be part of this production and to enchant the characters of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" together with Aline and the team. The performances on January 17, 18, 20 and 22, 2025 offered the audience not only a musical highlight, but also a visual feast that was enriched by our make-up work. With this piece we are also celebrating our 10th anniversary at the University of Music
